No zeitgeist, no compromise

This summer, the Greith Haus is dedicating its major exhibition to an exceptional artist of Austrian modernism: Franz Grabmayr (1927-2015). The focus is on his impressive dance paintings - dynamic compositions created from the 1970s onwards, often directly during rehearsals and performances at the Vienna State Opera. Grabmayr knew how to transform movement into painting like no other. With flaming watercolors, subtle fabric works and monumental oil paintings, he captures the fleeting energy of the moment on canvas. His paintings dance themselves. Born in Carinthia, deeply connected to the nature and culture of the region, Grabmayr developed a pictorial language of immediate expressiveness. For him, dance was not just a motif - but an act of creative unleashing. With his powerful work, Grabmayr played a special role in art history after 1945. In the 1980s, he became a source of inspiration for the Neue Wilde and a cult figure in Austrian painting.

Young artists such as Herbert Brandl and Hubert Scheibl sought him out because he encouraged them - after a phase of minimalism and conceptual art - to work freely and expressively with the brush again. While the Neue Wilden soon became internationally successful, Grabmayr largely withdrew from the exhibition scene. As a result, he remained largely unknown to a wider public for a long time.

Just last fall, the Albertina presented the Carinthian material artist with a comprehensive exhibition. At the same time, the Vienna State Opera presented 22 dance pictures - found in a portfolio compiled by Grabmayr himself entitled Opera 1970-1980.
