Description
With great attention to detail, the Sellemols Club has assembled a selection of exhibits that show how life once functioned without electric helpers. Among other things, mechanical kitchen appliances such as coffee grinders, moka grinders, poppy and nut mills, a bean slicer, and a nostalgic dough mixer can be seen. There are also devices for food preparation and preservation – such as a butter ladle, a waffle iron, or a classic bread slicing machine – providing an authentic insight into everyday kitchen life.
In addition, the exhibition includes hand-operated devices for textile processing like a spinning wheel, as well as tools such as a hand drill and a fine saw. Special attention is drawn to lighting before electrification: stable, carriage, and coach lanterns, kerosene lamps, acetylene lamps, and candle holders show how people managed in the dark.
There's also much to discover in the areas of communication and household – from writing feathers, ink wells, and writing sets to mechanical alarm clocks, irons, and a historical sewing machine, as well as hot water bottles for the stomach and bed, which provided warmth during cold winter nights.
The exhibition offers an exciting look back at a time when ingenuity, manual labor, and mechanical skill determined everyday life. It is aimed at all generations – as a reminder for the older and as an illustrative history lesson for the younger.
